SET PAINTING
Doing art away from the computer once in a while is great therapy and feeds back into my digital work by trusting my artistic instincts more when applying hand to brush. Undoing mistakes in the real world is a lot more work, so you need to both have a good plan and commit to a vision. Part of the challenge and fun community theater is doing the best you can with limited resources, a shoe-string budget, and whatever I can do with limited (volunteer) hours. ...But the show must go on!
Wizard of Oz
City of Gilroy, 2019
8ft x 4t plasticore. Inspired by the actuated Wizard head from Wicked, this was a much cheaper rendition. the director installed glowing LED lights, the master carpenter built a stand and base that allowed the head to pivot and jaw to open and close. Fire extinguishers shot out of the sides for dramatic effect.
Thoroughly Modern Millie
South Valley Civic Theatre, 2018
32ft x 17ft mural on canvas, latex paints. Based on the set designer's image of a 1920's style ad deteriorating against an external brick wall of a speak-easy. A working secret door entrance was placed in the area of the woman's tie where actors would enter during the scene. The mural was too big to fit onto a workspace in the theater's warehouse, so I could only paint a quadrant at a time.
